Our THE PACK Plaza Calendar for 2025

The Pack - Mon, 2024-10-14 11:39

At THE PACK Plaza, our goal is to inform consumers, businesses, and industry professionals about electric motorbikes and mopeds in order to increase awareness and usage.

THE PACK Plaza - Electric Motorcycle News What is a THE PACK Plaza?

Guy Salens: “We have created a unique pop-up space that can be found at various automotive events throughout the Benelux area (Belgium, Netherlands). Through negotiations with event organizers, we are able to offer affordable rates for startups and brands to showcase their products. We have deliberately chosen not to participate in motorcycle events, but instead focus on larger car shows that attract a high volume of visitors. Our first successful experience was at the Brussels Auto Show in January 2024, where there was great interest in our environmentally-friendly mode of transportation. In partnership with 402 Automotive, THE PACK proudly presented a live electric hub spanning 300 square meters, showcasing a range of light electric vehicle manufacturers and their innovative solutions for mobility.”

THE PACK Plaza - EV experience 2024 - Electric Motorcycle News

You may have heard the saying: “if you can’t beat them, join them.” While it may seem a bit extreme, the truth is that the electric two-wheeler industry is still a relatively new and underestimated market. Since 2017, our international platform, THE PACK, has been spreading awareness about this innovative form of e-mobility to a global audience online. And now, with THE PACK Plaza, we have the exciting opportunity to showcase real-life solutions to the public. Our focus is not only on existing motorcycle riders but also on potential clients who are tired of being stuck in traffic. Thanks to advancements in technology, riding these lightweight electric vehicles has become incredibly easy. In Belgium, you can even use your car license to legally ride an 11 kW motorbike (equivalent to a traditional 125cc bike) – making it accessible to even more people. Test rides are available at THE PACK Plaza for the complete experience.

With a resounding 90% expressing interest in attending the second edition, it’s clear that Ghent and its newly added Action Arena were highly favored choices. These factors played a significant role in our decision to continue hosting BAS in its new location. Energica, a human and technological heritage to be preserved

The Pack - Sun, 2024-10-13 09:53

Author: Marco Ghezzi | This publication is a collab between Marco Ghezzi, an Italian journalist focused on electric motorcycle news and promoting electric mobility through the eV-Now! Foundation and THE PACK.

Energica - Rock Distribution - Latvia - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News

Located in Modena, at the heart of Italy’s Motor Valley, the same region where legendary automotive brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani, and others were born, lies Energica. This company, driven by the passion, commitment, and expertise of its people, today stands as flagship of electric two-wheel mobility Made in Italy. Its motorcycles, high-performing and technologically advanced, range from the most sporty models to those designed for touring, and are admired and in demand worldwide, with a strong presence in the USA and Northern Europe.

Energica - Rock Distribution - Latvia - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News A story of innovation and success

Founded in 2014 from the bold vision of the CRP Group, a family owned enterprise synonymous with excellence in motorsport, Energica has set the standard for high-performance electric mobility over 13 years of hard work and extraordinary achievements. It has proven that electric motorcycles can offer the same excitement and performance that enthusiasts expect from traditional bikes.
In 2014, the sportbike Energica EGO was introduced, followed by the naked EVA in 2015. These pioneering motorcycles made bold statements of faith in a sustainable future. In 2017, the EsseEsse9 was unveiled, introducing innovations in battery and motor design, culminating in the revolutionary touring bike Experia in 2022. All these products combine great power and torque, the fastest charging—also in direct current—and the longest range between charges ever achieved for series-production electric motorcycles.

Energica - Rock Distribution - Latvia - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News Test ride Energica Experia - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News

Great satisfaction also came from competitive racing, as from 2019 to 2022 Energica served as the sole manufacturer for the FIM MotoE™ World Cup, the fully electric class of MotoGP. Energica provided 18 Ego Corsa motorcycles, none will have any technical problem, earning praise for their reliability and performance from both professional riders and MotoGP team managers.
In 2023, a major breakthrough occurred in the racing world with Energica’s participation in the MotoAmerica Super Hooligan Championship with the Eva Ribelle RS, equipped with the Kit Corsa Clienti. This was a challenge never before attempted in a road series, not even on four wheels, as Energica became the first and only electric motorcycle manufacturer to compete in a championship against internal combustion engine bikes. The Eva Ribelle made history with a series of victories, securing 2nd place at COTA and finishing the championship in 4th place.

Energica Motor - COTA - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News The Greatest Challenge

All of this was accomplished by a small start-up with limited resources and funding which, despite the odds, achieved peak sales and revenues of €13 million in 2022. However, Energica’s primary investor, the American company Ideanomics, hit by the Nasdaq tech stock crisis, has increasingly delayed its financial support since 2022, eventually cutting it off completely in 2023. Today, Energica faces a paradoxical situation because, despite a substantial order backlog (further to this, Energica won 3 tenders for the fleet with France government, Paris city government, Spain, and they are testing bikes with 17 further tenders worldwide with extreme success and satisfaction of the government testers), it is struggling to continue production and is urgently seeking new investors to avoid the risk of closure. Furthermore Energica is the manufacturer earning more credits from the CARB (California Air Resources Board) to offset penalties for ICE bikes manufacturer at all.

Energica Motor Company - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News

“We have highlighted the value the company has brought to the Motor Valley over these 13 years. We created the so-called ‘Electric Valley’ thanks to the investments of the founding partners and minority shareholders who have continued to support the business through the darkest times. Other companies have invested in EVs and chosen to locate their headquarters near our facilities because of us,” said then CEO Livia Cevolini. “Now, we need help. We have developed technology, know-how, and jobs in our region. Over the past 18 months, we have engaged with various investors and industrial groups, but it seems nearly impossible to find investors willing to commit, particularly in the EV industry during this period and especially in Italy.”

Energica Motor Company - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News

The issue has even been brought to the Regional level, but politics has not made any real effort, going no further than social safety nets, which remain merely a stopgap. Unfortunately, this is a truly critical moment, and it’s not just about saving a company but also about protecting a human and technological heritage, as well as a milestone in the world of electric mobility and automotive industry. Allowing this to dissipate would be unforgivable.

ENERGICA >

Note of THE PACK, Guy Salens: “We have been following Energica since our startup began in early 2017. In the spring of that year, we were lucky to test ride the Eva and Ego models in the Netherlands. Five years later, in 2022, we were invited by Marchel Bulthuis from Energica Motor Nederland (the official importer of the Italian brand in the Netherlands) to test their newest model, “Experia”. Our test rider Andrew Thijssen from BMS-E Motorrijder had nothing but positive things to say about these high-tech Italian electric motorbikes. It would be a great loss for the electric motorbike industry if this brand ever disappeared. I am making a strong appeal to potential investors who can provide growth opportunities for this European brand.”

One of their highly anticipated products, SPORT TS16.10, has already garnered attention from potential corporate partners.

EICMA 2024 - Balistron - SPORT TS16.10 - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News

At this inaugural meet-up of motorcycle enthusiasts from all over Europe, BALISTRON will showcase this SPORT TS16.10 model. EICMA 2024 - Balistron - SPORT TS16.10 - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News

Note of the Editor:

We were surprised by the presence of what appeared to be ‘exhaust-pipes’ on this SPORT model. Doubtful, we reached out to BALISTRON for clarification on whether we had received incorrect images. To our surprise, we learned that these were not actual exhaust pipes, but rather sound speakers! It turns out that some of the BALISTRON team have backgrounds in the car industry and enjoy incorporating automotive elements into their designs. While it may not be everyone’s taste, there is an option to remove the sound speakers or simply turn off the engine sound with a button.

Guy Salens – THE PACK: It’s quite a daring choice to prominently display these system speakers, almost resembling an exhaust pipe on an electric motorbike. But BALISTRON also wants to attract the traditional motor enthusiasts. I’m eager to see the responses at EICMA!

About BALISTRON

FAMEL launches investment round to revitalize the iconic Portuguese motorcycle brand

The Pack - Sat, 2024-09-21 12:43

B2B News | Back in March of 2021, THE PACK announced the revival of Famel, the renowned Portuguese motorcycle brand, with the release of pre-orders for their new E-XF model. This updated version takes inspiration from the legendary XF-17 and incorporates electric propulsion as a way to modernize the brand. And now, FAMEL is seeking investments to revitalize the company and make the iconic electric XF-17 available once again for riders everywhere.

Famel Portugal - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle News

The NOVUS Fund, in collaboration with Magnify Capital Partners and Banco Português de Fomento, has already injected €2.45 million into the company. Other private entities are also projected to contribute to this investment round. This funding will enable FAMEL to expedite its strategic plan of revitalizing the brand and establishing a strong foothold in the European market for electric two-wheeled vehicles. This effort is in line with the increasing demand for eco-friendly means of transportation. To learn more about how you can invest, please email Famel at invest@famel.pt

A new chapter with deep roots

According to CEO & Re-Founder of FAMEL, Joel Sousa, revitalizing the brand is about more than just creating motorcycles; it’s about reigniting a legacy and a love for the company. By bringing back the beloved XF-17 model, FAMEL not only honors its past but also aligns with the modern desire for environmentally-friendly and efficient modes of transportation.

THE PACK reader’s test review: Flip Oude Weernink with his Zero SR/S in Ostfriesland

The Pack - Fri, 2024-09-20 10:32

Covering nearly 1,000 km in just four days. With a combustion engine, no one will doubt whether this will work. But what about doing it with an electric Zero SR/S in Ostfriesland, where charging stations are scarce*? Spoiler alert: I can confirm that it works perfectly fine.

THE PACK readers test ride - Zero SR/S - Electric Motorcycle NewsPacked and ready at home, last minutes charging to 100%

As soon as you enter Ostfriesland, you can’t help but notice the vast number of wind turbines dotting the flat landscape, reminiscent of the Netherlands. The blades on all of them are spinning gracefully in the wind. While I wasn’t concerned about finding enough electricity to charge my SR/S, I did have reservations about the availability of charging stations. According to various charging apps, many of the places we planned to visit lacked nearby charging options.

THE PACK readers test ride - Zero SR/S - Electric Motorcycle News

The first part of the weekend trip was approximately 250 km from my hometown Havelte. I noticed a strong breeze, so I made a pit stop in Winschoten to refuel and meet up with my friend on his Moto Guzzi V7 Stone. Our other friend on a Honda CB1100 couldn’t join us due to a work-related injury the previous week, but he kept us informed from afar by providing weather updates. The forecast predicted strong winds, as mentioned earlier.

THE PACK readers test ride - Zero SR/S - Electric Motorcycle News

After a stop for lunch and to charge the electric motorcycle in Winschoten, we arrived at our overnight destination in Aurich with over 40% battery life. On the way, we took an old ferry across the Ems River and drove on what turned out to be the bumpiest road I have ever ridden on. Just to be safe, I had brought a “granny charger” with me, not knowing what to expect from the 22 kW charging stations near our accommodations in Aurich. As expected, the charging station did not deliver the promised power as listed in the app. However, since it consistently provided some charge, I was content to use it. The day ended with a surprisingly tasty schnitzel and glasses of Jever beer at the “Alteste Kneipe von Aurich,” a place that felt like time had stood still and we had been transported back to an era where electric motorcycles didn’t exist.

The second day of our trip was dedicated to a visit to Bremerhaven, specifically the ‘Wilhelm Bauer Type XXI U-boat’ which was over 200 km away. In the morning, my SR/S showed 225 km on the dashboard, based on my riding behavior from the previous day. However, we received a message from home warning us about strong winds (which turned out to be 4/5 Beaufort). The SR/S is sensitive to wind, so I decided to plan for a charging stop in Bremerhaven. When I arrived, I had 48% SoC remaining, which was cutting it close for making it back without charging. We searched for a charging station, but after accidentally taking a wrong turn and getting scolded by a ‘Bremer Haven official,’ we finally found open spots in a parking garage across from the U-boat. After fully charging and enjoying an impressive tour inside the U-boat as well as a delicious lunch by the harbor, I had more than enough power to ride back to Aurich without any worries. I arrived with just under 50% SoC once.

The following morning, we stopped at a street-side charging station so I could recharge my bike while we grabbed breakfast at a local bakery. Day three of our trip was focused on touristy spots, with around 200 km to cover as we explored the northern, eastern, and southern corners of Ostfriesland. Our first stop was the ‘Opstalsboom,’ a significant location in Frisian history. We then rode through forests and past groups of Germans playing klootschieten (street bowling), passing by areas that were once popular tourist destinations but now seemed to be fading away. The roads along the rivers Leda and Jumme were breathtaking, with dikes stretching out on either side. Our day ended with a crossing of the ‘narrowest car bridge in Europe,’ the Armdorfer Brucke. Surprisingly, there was no wind, which greatly improved the performance of my SR/S. Despite the many 100 km/h roads, I didn’t need to recharge at all. I also discovered that day that the SR/S offers excellent riding comfort; its slightly lower footpegs and higher handlebar position make it perfect for multi-day trips compared to its sibling, the SR/F.

On our journey, we made a stop in Jever with the intention of touring the local brewery. However, it was closed when we arrived. So instead, we settled for a non-alcoholic Jever-Fun at a nearby café. Surprisingly, the half-liter of beer did not taste completely alcohol-free to me. To play it safe, I decided to take a break and recharge my electric bike as well. Fortunately, one of the few available charging stations in Jever worked perfectly, even though I probably paid extra for the extended charging time. The last leg of our trip was effortless for the SR/S, and I reached our destination – a hotel and event venue – with over 50% battery remaining. However, upon arrival, we were met with some challenges as there was a large group of 80 cyclists having a barbecue at our overnight spot. Luckily, I managed to find an e-bike charging point where my SR/S could quietly charge using the ‘granny charger’ I brought along. We were even invited to join in on the barbecue, where we enjoyed bratwursts, fries, and Bitburger beers. One slightly intoxicated cyclist showed great interest in the SR/S and took many photos with it. Later on, he confessed that he had been riding motorcycles without a license for years and asked me not to tell anyone.

The next morning, my alarm went off earlier than usual, and I rode the final stretch back to Havelte through dense fog. Despite the challenging weather conditions, I managed to make it home without needing to stop and recharge. My first multi-day trip abroad on an electric motorcycle was a success in many ways. Most importantly, I was relieved to find that riding an electric motorcycle in a different country didn’t come with the fear of running out of range or having to constantly search for charging stations. In the end, our planned routes were actually shorter than the SR/S’s impressive range allowed, with only a couple stops for charging along the way. So, even day trips of around 300 km are easily achievable with some preparation beforehand. The only obstacle we faced was the strong wind, but overall it was a great experience.

* Editor’s note from THE PACK: “Flip has no use for DC chargers with his Zero, and for the Zero he needs at least 11kW 3-phase chargers. And there just aren’t many of them. In a city like Aurich (45,000 inhabitants) there are only 6 (!). Compared to the Netherlands, he found that quite scarce. So there may well be quite a few charging stations, but that doesn’t mean he can use them all.”

Team HRC will compete with the Honda RTL ELECTRIC trial motorbike in the All Japan Trial Championship

The Pack - Fri, 2024-09-13 08:13

Honda’s RTL ELECTRIC, is their first electric trial motorbike designed for competition. The development of this bike was heavily influenced by the technology and expertise gained from their Montesa COTA 4RT factory bike, which has helped Toni Bou secure an impressive 18 consecutive titles in the FIM Trial World Championship. Furthermore, the development of the RTL ELECTRIC also draws on knowledge of electric components (such as the motor and battery) from Honda’s CR ELECTRIC PROTO, a bike that recently competed in the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup – a global event for electric off-road bikes.

Last but not least, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Takahisa Fujinami for his full support in this project!”

Fabrice: “EKO Motorwear originated from EKO Light, a company that specialized in producing bicycle lighting. Along with our lighting products, we also sold cycling gloves on the side until one day our production partner introduced us to motorcycle gloves. To test their popularity, we brought them to a local motorcycle fair along with some jackets and trousers. Much to our surprise, they were a huge hit. In the 1990s, EKO Light was acquired by a larger company, prompting us to shift our focus solely onto motorcycle clothing with the new name EKO Motorwear. With this new direction came our own brand, G&F, known for its high-quality manufacturing and excellent value for money.”

The two faces of Normandy

The Pack - Thu, 2024-09-05 14:54

Text by Marco Ghezzi | Photos by Matteo Maraglino & Matteo Cantatore | This publication is a collab between Marco Ghezzi, an Italian journalist focused on motorcycle tourism and promoting electric mobility through the eV-Now! Foundation and THE PACK. A journey through historical events and thrilling active tourism experiences to discover some of the most renowned places, as well as lesser-known ones in Normandy.

As the wheels of our electric fat bikes race across an endless expanse of golden sand, pounded by a relentless sea, I can’t help but think that right here one of the most brutal and tragic battles in contemporary history took place. We’re at Omaha Beach, and this shore, like many others along the Normandy coast, was the stage for the famous D-Day, the Allied invasion that marked the beginning of the end of World War II. These places, with their immense historical significance, – the 80th anniversary of D-Day was recently commemorated here – make you stop and reflect.

Marco Ghezzi - Normandy - Energica - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle NewsOmaha Beach Marco Ghezzi - Normandy - Energica - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle NewsOmaha Beach

However, alongside the powerful memory of the past, these locations now offer engaging active tourism experiences. We’re eager to explore them in a different way, more dynamic and stimulating, that, while respecting their solemnity, offers a renewed image of this region. Here we are, pedaling along with Gilles, our guide, who, with great passion and enthusiasm, explains the stages of the landing, taking us to the most significant spots on Omaha Beach, from bunkers to trenches, even showing us the remains of an amphibious vehicle recently unearthed from the sands. Touching this relic from the past, our thoughts turn to the thousands of men who sacrificed their lives here so we could live in a freer world. Not far away Utah Beach, the first to be stormed by the Allies, is another iconic site of that June 6, 1944, when 23,000 soldiers landed.

Here too, while we can immerse ourselves in history at the large museum overlooking the sea or in front of the many commemorative monuments and moving memorials, we’re also ready for a new adrenaline experience, challenging the beach aboard car sailings. Steering these small sailboats on wheels takes a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, it’s pure fun to race, drift, chase each other, and sometimes even flip over, powered only by the wind!

The same wind that brushes against us as while our journey continues aboard two exceptional vehicles. In addition to honoring history, we also want to be respectful of the solemn atmosphere and the preserved nature of these places, visiting them almost “on tiptoe.” That’s why we opted for electric motorcycles, an EsseEsse 9 and an Experia from Energica, both perfectly suited for touring.

These motorbikes are not only eco-friendly but also move quietly, allowing us to experience firsthand the real potential of taking a medium-to-long distance trip by electric mobility. After all, this is a new way of traveling on two wheels, still in its early stages in some respects, but with the potential to become an exciting adventure, especially for the motorcyclists of a new era. Normandy has proven to be ideal for an electric road trip, and it’s a true pleasure to find ourselves leisurely wandering, following the numerous winding, solitary roads that weave through the countryside, accompanied only by the sound of the wind.

As the roads of the Cotentin Peninsula, for example, which stretch from the bucolic landscapes of the inland to the wind-swept coast, passing through picturesque fishing villages, where the genuine rhythm of daily life still flows. Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is one such village, welcoming us with the lively atmosphere of its renowned market, where the “petit paniers,” local small-scale producers, offer fresh seafood and seasonal goods. The stalls are brimming with oysters, scallops, a mouth-watering array of cheeses -including the ever-present Camembert – and many other regional specialties, creating a true feast of Norman flavors.

Continuing along the coast, we reach the huge beach of Jonville. This stretch of shoreline, where the tide can retreat for hundreds of meters, is an ideal spot for a relaxing walk or simply stopping to gaze at the ocean, soaking in that sense of vastness and freedom that these spaces with their infinite horizons so effortlessly evoke.

History takes center stage again when we arrive in Arromanches, a town famous for the artificial harbor used during the D-Day landings. At the evocative D-Day Museum, a lot of models, photos, and archival videos showcase the phases of constructing this remarkable feat. But what leaves the strongest impression are the remnants of the landing platforms, known as Mulberry Harbour, which still stand today as silent witnesses to a monumental undertaking. Our kayaks are already waiting on the shore, and for another adrenaline-filled adventure, we set out to explore these metal giants from the sea. The water-level perspective offers a unique and evocative view, making it easy to imagine the constant flow of troops and materials that passed through here during those crucial days.

Marco Ghezzi - Normandy - Energica - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle NewsArromanches Marco Ghezzi - Normandy - Energica - THE PACK - Electric Motorcycle NewsArromanches

Beyond its historical significance, Arromanches has much more to offer. Its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, the charming Norman houses with their stone facades and slate roofs, the lovely seaside promenade, and the small cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious seafood dishes and sip on a good Calvados (the famous Norman apple brandy) make it a truly delightful town. The most enchanting moment, however, comes once again on our bikes. With just a touch of throttle, we follow the road that winds up to the Royal Memorial promontory, one of the best spots to take in the panoramic view of this stretch of coast. In front of us, the sunset paints the cliffs in countless shades of red and orange while the sun disappears over the horizon.

Beyond the beaches and historical memories, however, there is another Normandy waiting to be discovered, that of the inland. The locals call it “La Suisse Normande,”  for its rolling green hills, dense forests, and picturesque villages that paint a completely different landscape from the coast. We realize this as we follow the winding roads through a scene that feels like it’s straight out of an Impressionist painting. The discreet hum of our electric bikes makes us feel even more immersed in the tranquility and beauty of these places, adding a touch of magic to our journey.

Le Hom is a small village that seems frozen in time. Nestled between the hills and the Orne River, it retains an authentic rural architecture and a slow pace of life. Here, the waters of the Orne flow gently, perfect for a relaxed paddle; the canoes lined up along the banks beckon us, and we’re quick to trade our saddles for paddles, ready to enjoy another delightful excursion. The picturesque village of Clécy, known as the “capital” of Norman Switzerland, embodies even more the charm and beauty of the French countryside, offering a perfect blend of history and outdoor adventure. Just outside the village, a trail leads to the Rochers des Parcs, a natural area marked by towering cliffs overlooking the Orne River. The climb, though short, requires some effort, but in the end, we’re rewarded for making the trek. From the top of a rock overlooking the valley, we can take in a breathtaking natural panorama.

The winding and thrilling Route des Crêtes runs high along the hills, leading us to Rochers de la Houle, the most spectacular viewpoint in Norman Switzerland, and finally to Falaise, famous as the birthplace of William the Conqueror. The town, still enclosed by mighty walls, with its cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses, preserves its medieval soul. William’s castle, perched atop a hill, dominates the landscape, and visiting it is like stepping back in time, through medieval rooms and massive walls that tell the story of the Norman who became King of England.

In the nearby square named after him, we come across “War is Hell,” a unique artwork in France, created by Jef Aérosol, a pioneering French street artist. He has adorned a real Sherman tank with dozens of images of men, women, and children. It’s a tribute to the civilians and soldiers who were victims of conflicts, a message of peace, and a symbol of a Normandy that remembers its past but also seeks to give history a new face.

Normandy is well-organized in terms of electric mobility, with charging stations, particularly AC ones, distributed across the region. Fast DC charging stations are available in all major towns along the coast, but somewhat less so in the inland areas. We found DC charging stations in Caen, Bayeux, Carentan, Valognes, often located near shopping centers. A useful app for finding these stations is Nextcharge, which also allows preloading the card for payments.
