LLeo - Tue, 2025-06-03 23:00

Donut Lab’s entirely new approach to building electric vehicles

The Pack - Fri, 2024-11-22 10:50

Source: press release Donut Lab | Donut Lab has developed an entirely new approach to building electric vehicles. Using their development platform, manufacturers can now access a collection of interchangeable parts that allow for the creation of various electric vehicles, including supercars, buses, drones, and SUVs, in record time. Furthermore, the company guarantees that these vehicles built on their platform will outperform others on the market with improved efficiency and reduced weight and manufacturing costs.

Studies show that the electric transportation market is projected to increase from USD 550 billion to USD 4.4 trillion by 2032. Donut Lab, a tech company focused on electrifying mobility, recognizes the immense opportunity in this market. As a subsidiary of Verge Motorcycles, a pioneer in electric motorcycles, Donut Lab is driving innovation in the automotive industry by consolidating all necessary components for an electric vehicle onto their single platform, available to all industry players.

“Verge TS is the world’s most advanced electric motorcycle. When developing it, we learned how difficult and slow it is to build electric vehicles using traditional mechanisms. The reason for this is that vehicles are built with components from different equipment manufacturers and are not designed to work together – integration work always takes up most of the time. We decided that if we were able to solve this, we would change the entire automotive industry,” says Marko Lehtimäki, CEO of Donut Lab.

The donut-shaped motor is a key feature of the company’s technology platform, providing superior performance compared to other electric motors in all types of vehicles. This motor can be directly installed into the wheel, eliminating the need for a complex drivetrain and making the manufacturing process more streamlined, lighter, and cost-effective. Other essential elements of the Donut platform include battery modules, computer units, and vehicle control software. These components come in various sizes and performance levels, and their modular design allows for use in a variety of vehicles – including robots.

Donut Lab’s components are also capable of functioning independently, making them a valuable addition to traditional mechanisms. For example, a manufacturer could incorporate a donut motor into a vehicle and see improved performance. However, when these components are combined, they create a cohesive entity that delivers unparalleled results. The Donut platform is also designed to expedite the development process for electric vehicles and can reduce resource demands by up to 95% compared to current standards. What once took years to accomplish can now be completed in just months.

“We want to set a new standard for what electric transportation can achieve. The Donut platform creates entirely new opportunities for almost any industry. In the future, those utilising the platform will be able to select the components they want from a catalogue and connect them with standard connectors, after which everything is ready. There is no need for compromises since each component is top class already as a standalone component, and together they take the vehicles themselves and their manufacturing to a whole new level,” says Ville Piippo, Product Director of Donut Lab.

The first partnerships prove the ingenuity of the platform

The platform stands out for its ability to adapt and accommodate various purposes, from hypercars and helicopters to robots and even space mission ATVs. Donut Lab has garnered much attention from different vehicle makers, and they have formed partnerships with operators to utilize the platform for converting existing vehicles to electric power as well as creating entirely new ones.

An example of a company that has utilized the Donut Lab platform in their product development process is Oruga, a Latvian manufacturer of electric vehicles designed for off-road driving. Their latest model, which resembles a futuristic blend of a snowmobile and motorcycle, will make its debut at the upcoming startup event, Slush, in Helsinki this week. Another company benefiting from the Donut platform is Hyper Q Aerospace from Australia, who uses it in the creation of their electric aircrafts.

“Our courageous objective inspires us to redefine off-road vehicles and build the world’s first electric single-roller off-road vehicle designed to travel effortlessly in challenging terrains, such as sand, mud and snow. Donut Lab sets a new standard for the industry, and the company’s technology platform allows for unprecedented configuration and performance that no other competitor can offer,” says Erick Pastor, CEO of Oruga. “No other operator has been able to achieve this level of innovation, and we are excited to be part of it.”
