First ride with NIU’s light electric offroad XQi3Energica: a story of passion and success
Author: Marco Ghezzi | This article is a collab between Marco Ghezzi, an Italian journalist focused on promoting electric mobility through the eV-Now! Foundation and THE PACK.

Energica isn’t just a company, it is a vision. A vision of a quieter, faster, and more sustainable future. In 15 years of passionate work, successes, and groundbreaking technological innovations, the Energica team proved that their motorcycles, “proudly built in Modena” aren’t just the future, they’re already the present of electric two-wheel mobility. But now, this incredible industrial and technological legacy is at risk due to a lack of investors. What’s next? Could there be someone on the horizon ready to believe in this vision once again and continue Energica’s legacy?
While we wait for answers, here’s a summary of its remarkable journey.
2009 – The first seeds of the CompanyEnergica was born as part of the CRP Group, a company with fifty years of history, closely tied to Formula 1 and NASCAR racing. In the early 2000s, CRP Racing was founded as an independent company competing with traditional internal combustion motorcycles in the Moto2 and 125cc categories. During that time, it achieved numerous victories and strong placements in the 125cc MotoGP World Championship. In 2009, an innovative project in the field of electric motorcycles was conceived, and in just six months, a fully electric racing motorcycle was created. This was the eCRP, which participated in the TTXGP, the first zero-carbon-emission motorcycle world championship. The project was a success: in just two years of development and innovation, the eCRP secured second place as World Champion in 2011 and first place as European Champion in 2010.

The eCRP team began working on a road-legal version of their electric motorcycle. The result was the EGO, the first high-performance electric motorcycle approved for street use. It was officially unveiled at EICMA 2012, and early press tests hailed it as a true electric revolution. In 2014 Energica Motor Company was officially founded, and in 2015 a second model was introduced: the Streetfighter Eva, developed on the same technological platform as the EGO.

These models were technologically advanced, being the first and only electric motorcycles to feature DC fast charging and holding three international patents related to the battery, eABS, and VCU. That same year, the company expanded its sales network across Europe and the rest of the world, and the U.S. Division, Energica Motor Company Inc., was established, with dealerships on both the East and West Coasts. In 2016 a new factory was built in Soliera and in 2017 another model was unveiled: the EsseEsse9, the first electric naked motorcycle inspired by 1960s design. The following year, it was awarded Best Electric Motorcycle of the Year.

Significant achievements come from racing. Energica becomes the sole manufacturer for the FIM MotoE World Cup, the fully electric class of MotoGP. The company supplies 18 specially designed EGO Corsa motorcycles, none of which encounter technical issues, earning praise for their reliability and performance. The EGO also remains the only production electric motorcycle to race and complete the Isle of Man circuit.

In 2023 another milestone is reached with participation in the MotoAmerica Super Hooligan Championship using the Eva Ribelle RS. This marks an unprecedented challenge as Energica becomes the first and only electric motorcycle manufacturer to compete in a championship against internal combustion engine motorcycles. The Eva Ribelle makes history by securing 2nd place at COTA and finishing the championship in 4th place. Meanwhile, growing international sales establish Energica as a global leader in the electric motorcycle sector. This success is complemented by significant technical improvements to the motorcycles. Leveraging knowledge gained from racing, Energica introduces a new 21.5 kWh battery pack. Lighter and more powerful, together with the new EMCE motor—which boasts reduced weight and increased efficiency—it ensures the longest range of any electric motorcycle.

In 2022, Energica introduces the Experia, the ultimate green tourer and the world’s first fully electric sport-touring motorcycle, designed from the ground up. Along with the new EMCE motor, it features improved battery chemistry, fast charging, extended range, and a new chassis design to reduce weight and enhance balance and handling. The launch of the Experia and the need for greater industrialization of production processes require new resources.

The American fund Ideanomics invests over $100 million to support Energica’s growth and agility. However, by 2023, the downturn in the electric vehicle market and the automotive supply chain begins to impact Ideanomics, compromising its ability to invest further in Energica. As funds freeze, Energica is unable to sustain production, leading to judicial liquidation in October 2024. This marks a paradoxical situation: despite the company being effectively halted, it retains an active customer portfolio, numerous orders, and significant contracts with foreign institutions for police fleets.
Is this truly the end of Energica’s story, or is there more to come?
ENERGICA >Vmoto highlights at EICMA 2024 with EMS – Electric Mobility Solution
At EICMA 2024, Vmoto unveiled EMS – Electric Mobility Solution, an advanced integrated system that aims to address the electric vehicle industry’s key challenges of charging, range, and fleet management. VMOTO >Zero Motorcycles accompanies the NN Zevenheuvelenloop in the Netherlands
For years, the NN Zevenheuvelenloop has attracted thousands of runners from the Netherlands and abroad to Nijmegen. The course is often considered the most beautiful in the country. Moreover, the current world records for 15 km for both men and women were set in Nijmegen.

The Zevenheuvelenloop Foundation organizes its events—the Alfa Laval Stevensloop, Zevenheuvelentrail, and the NN Zevenheuvelenloop—as sustainably as possible. As the organizer of large-scale events, we feel responsible for the impact such events have on our environment. That’s why, with every edition, we evaluate with our stakeholders where improvements can be made. Every aspect of the event, from waste management to timing vehicles, is scrutinized and analyzed.

This year, Zero Motorcycles is once again participating by providing transportation for photographers, medical staff, and officials to move among the runners. Electric motorcycles have the distinct advantage of being emission-free, exceptionally quiet, and highly sustainable. Electric Motorbikes Nederland, a Zero Motorcycles dealer, has organized an impressive lineup of various models for the volunteer motorcyclists.

The NN Zevenheuvelenloop is the 15 km autumn classic, known for its stunning, hilly course in and around Nijmegen. The race has a history of world-class and national-level performances, making it a staple on the (inter)national media calendar. However, the NN Zevenheuvelenloop isn’t just for global elites like Haile Gebrselassie. Competitive runners and recreational athletes from across the Netherlands also flock to Nijmegen each year. With over 33,000 participants registering annually, it is one of the largest sporting events in the Netherlands.

BALISTRON made its global debut at EICMA 2024
In the electric 2-wheeler mobility industry, BALISTRON is a newcomer. Mert Gucluer, the founding partner and executive, has already been in contact with THE PACK several times. At EICMA 2024, the company made its global debut and announced plans to enter European markets following the November 2024 show. After over 20 months of extensive development and testing, BALISTRON is ready to launch four motorcycle styles – scrambler, naked, sport, and cruiser – in Europe.

Guy Salens – THE PACK: “As I observed the SPORT model, I couldn’t help but notice what looked like exhaust pipes. However, upon closer inspection, I learned that they were actually sound speakers! It turns out that some members of the BALISTRON team have experience in the automotive industry and enjoy incorporating elements from cars into their designs. While this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, there is an option to remove the speakers or mute the engine sound with a simple button. The system offers various motorbike sounds to choose from. It’s certainly a bold move to prominently feature these speakers, almost resembling exhaust pipes on an electric motorbike, but it also shows BALISTRON’s desire to appeal to traditional motor enthusiasts”.

During EICMA in Milan, the brand’s initial introduction and product showcase to the corporate partners and motorcycle enthusiasts was a great success, according to Mert Gucluer.

Mert revealed that BALISTRON is a highly ambitious company with numerous plans in the works: “Our goal is to provide an alternative to traditional energy companies. We specialize in electric-powered mobility products, starting with two-wheelers but expanding to four-wheelers and three-wheelers soon. Our plans don’t stop there; we also have our sights set on developing mobility options for sea and air travel. One thing that is integral to our brand is prioritizing the joy of driving and easy ownership, while also incorporating high standards of comfort and safety into our designs.”

About BALISTRON
Founded in 2022, BALISTRON’s roots can be traced back to the late 2020s when the concept of investing in electric mobility was first introduced. As a company dedicated to revolutionizing transportation and becoming an industry leader in sustainable and eco-friendly solutions for urban areas, BALISTRON prioritizes cutting-edge technology and environmental responsibility. Their ultimate goal is to make a positive global impact on cities and communities through their innovative approach to mobility.

BALISTRON is currently developing distribution channels across Europe.

The new Silence S02 scooter – designed for private customers and for the sharing service the company offers in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valencia, among others – is suitable for both personal and professional use. It features larger wheels that provide greater stability and safety. It is a robust vehicle, weighing just 130 kilograms with the battery, and has an under-seat compartment for helmet storage.
This scooter model, starting at €2,800, will be offered in two versions: the L1e (moped) and the L3e. They will have a maximum speed of 45 kilometers / hour and 90 kilometers / hour, respectively, with a range of 133 kilometers for the more powerful version.

Silence is also working on the GT-SX Prototype, a grand touring motorcycle prototype, which will feature two batteries providing a range of over 200 kilometers. It will be ideal for commuters traveling daily from metropolitan areas to large cities, allowing them to avoid traffic without polluting.
Another key feature will be its cruising speed. Thanks to a new motor, it will be capable of traveling on intercity roads, comfortably reaching the maximum permitted speed. Like all GT models, it is a fully-faired motorcycle, offering excellent aerodynamic protection for both the rider and the passenger.

The motorcycle has ample storage space under the seat, able to easily hold two full-face helmets.
All three new models that Silence is presenting at the Milan Show share the same removable battery, a consistent feature across all their vehicles, including the S04 nanocar, which has been available since July in the brand’s stores and in Nissan’s European network.
The company has an extensive network of battery swapping stations, allowing users who opt for a subscription model – reducing the price by up to 35%, depending on the model – to swap batteries in just a few seconds.

CFMOTO caught attention when they unveiled the CF-X electric motocross concept, paying tribute to the impressive design and forward-thinking philosophy represented by the ZEEHO brand. The CF-X embodies the idea of enjoyable and competitive offroading while prioritizing safety: ‘experience more together’. This project showcases the advantages of zero emissions and the instant torque and acceleration that lead to a rush of adrenaline for riders.

The CF-X has the power equivalent of a 450cc ICE engine thanks to its motor, which is also integral to its handling capabilities. The designers focused on creating a frame that was both strong and lightweight with a low center of gravity for improved agility. To handle bumps and jumps, it comes with 310 mm adjustable WP Suspension, while the ergonomics are geared towards competition and pushing limits from a seat height of 960 mm.

With every gram of its 125kg weight and the strength of its high-performance race parts, this bike exudes quality, precision, and fine engineering. It also boasts advanced electronics for monitoring, customizable riding modes, and a 3-1 400V drive system that can propel the rider to speeds of up to 50 kmph in a matter of seconds.

A radiator that is cooled by liquid is attached to the rear of the design, ensuring a smooth flow and maximum efficiency. This style of the CF-X highlights CFMOTO’s impressive reputation in the world of racing. This work is yet another stunning example of the design team’s ability to prioritize both dynamic movement and practicality for every rider.

CFMOTO >White Motorcycle Concepts and Zero Motorcycles reveal “Intelligent Aero” technology concept
Source: press release* WMC | White Motorcycle Concepts (WMC), the company behind the British electric motorcycle land-speed world-record programme, has collaborated with Zero Motorcycles to prototype the world’s first electric sports bike to incorporate WMC’s patented intelligent aerodynamic duct producing a 10% reduction in aerodynamic drag.

The re-engineered Zero SR/S concept incorporates a bespoke bifurcated aerodynamic duct running directly through the centre of the motorcycle, channelling air from behind the front wheel and exiting above the rear wheel. To enhance the airflow through the patented duct, the team has also designed a new aerodynamic front fender and fork shroud package, ensuring maximum airflow through the system.
The two companies first connected at the Italian Motorcycle Show (EICMA) in November 2023, where WMC and Zero shared a vision, focused on advancing efficient innovation, improving range performance to meet customer expectations for EV motorcycles. The designed architecture of the Zero SR/S makes it ideal to integrate an aerodynamic duct.

The two organizations have been working on an accelerated development programme to deliver this proof of concept. Following processes and procedures learnt whilst working in F1 and worlds sports car programmes, and honed on similar projects, the WMC in-house engineering teams have rapidly developed the concept; using a range of validated in-house modelling and computer fluid dynamics simulation techniques, prototyping and validation, using aero rakes commonly used in high level motorsport, and finally engineering for, and delivering, full assembly, enabling real world testing.

“The whole industry is currently facing a huge technical/commercial challenge to produce an electric motorcycle with performance close to its petrol equivalent.” said Robert White, Founder & CEO, White Motorcycle Concepts. “This problem space will not be solved by battery technology alone, it requires a blend of innovations to bridge the gap now and provide efficiency benefits in the future.
When I first saw the Zero SR/S frame and battery architecture, I immediately recognized the opportunity to retrofit a duct. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, though the duct is limited by existing packaging constraints. It would offer even greater performance if integrated from the start of a motorcycle’s design.

Aerodynamics is a hot topic, especially in MotoGP, where winglets and other devices improve lap times, though this efficiency benefit does not always translate to retail bikes. Our intelligent aero duct enhances aerodynamic efficiency, positively impacting upon power consumption, especially at high speeds.”

The result, the new WMCSRS concept, presents the world’s first demonstration of our patented duct within a mid-sized sports bike and has been developed using all of White Motorcycle Concepts knowledge gained from their previous applications of their patented duct.
Within this application the design team have created a vertically bifurcated duct that picks the air up behind the front wheel and navigates the existing ZERO SR/S architecture and exits the bike just under the seat. Through the baseline testing phase the engineering team used F1 style aero rakes in front and behind the front wheel and in front of the rear wheel to gain a deep understanding of the air flow. This work identified the impact of the upstream architecture on the performance of the duct and so bespoke front fenders and fork shrouds have been created to enhance the overall performance.

The concept behind this central air duct has been honed as part of the White Motorcycle Concept’s land-speed record programme, and in the WMCSRS development the optimised dual-channel design, and upstream architecture, delivers a 10% increase in aerodynamic efficiency, equating to increased range at highway speeds.
The aerodynamic efficiency gain can be used to extend range or lower costs, reducing the need for a larger battery, which in turn cuts down on weight, charge time, and battery expenses. The duct is affordable to integrate and manufacture, with its range benefits remaining consistent over time. It enables increased top speed (max), top speed sustained and acceleration with a very low risk of component failure, and its advantages increase with higher-speed riding, unlike batteries, which tend to lose efficiency under such conditions.

“From our initial meeting at EICMA we have been interested to understand the potential impact of WMC’s aerodynamic duct” said Abe Askenazi, Zero Motorcycles CTO. “We are committed to innovation and, while battery development is advancing rapidly, we believe a combination of technologies is the key to developing the electric motorcycles of the future. This proof of concept has given us valuable insights into the potential benefits of integrating an aerodynamic duct into electric motorcycles, and we will continue to explore complementary technological advancements to deliver market-leading products for our customers.”

Following the lead of the car market exploration of all aspects of efficiency to extend range, the new generation of electric and hybrid cars are 30% more efficient than cars produced just 5 years ago. The motorcycle industry can look beyond the limitations of current battery technology and embrace complimentary and consistent solutions to transition to net zero. In respect to WMC’s patented duct, the benefit that can be gained will increase over time: as motorcycles will have to remain the same size to respect the rider, but as battery energy density increases this opens up greater volumes for a larger duct. Creating a virtuous circle of benefit, larger duct, less batteries, more volume, larger duct.
The project is a great demonstration of what is possible when two innovative companies work together to address one of the motorcycle industry’s greatest challenges.
The new WMCSRS concept will make its public debut at Motorcycle Live 16-24th November 2024 and can be found on the Zero Motorcycle Stand 4A15, at the National Exhibition Centre Birmingham, UK.
